How to tell if Your Car Engine is Overheating?

Anytime our vehicles are experiencing problems, we end up being tense and stressed out. We are never sure if we will reach our destinations safely. There is also the scare that we will face expensive repairs that we had not planned in our budget. To avoid this type of stress, it is essential to keep up with regular engine service.

One of the most common car problems is an overheating engine. Below are tips on how to tell if your car engine is overheating:

  • The first and most obvious way how to tell if your car engine is overheating is the emission of smoke from the bonnet. While it is still possible for the car to be overheating and no steam or smoke is seen, a smoky hood indicates an issue. If your smell is keen enough, there might be a burning smell. In some instance, the exhaust pipe might also be emitting steam.
  • Every automobile needs enough coolant to ensure that it does not become too hot. If the level of coolant is too low, it is possible that the car heater will start giving out cool air instead of warm air. This is a clear indication that in due time, the engine will start overheating. Check under your car for puddles if you think the coolant might be leaking.
  • Every automobile has an inbuilt temperature gauge on the dashboard. This indicator has two extremes, C for Cool and H for Hot. If the needle of the pointer is on H, then you need to pull over and give your car the rest it needs.
  • You will hear a bubbling sound if the coolant enters the overflow container. This is fairly common, but be sure to have it checked out.
